Everyone knows the stand out red flags during the hiring process, such as the candidate being rude or belligerent, or hearing about a history of untrustworthiness from past employers. But, what about the subtle red flags that are easy to brush off? Recognizing these red flags are especially important when you are hiring someone to be in your office while you are not, such as a custodial service.
When a representative from a commercial cleaning service comes to bid your office space, pay attention to their body language. If they seem distant when talking about the work, can’t give clear examples of past similar jobs they have had, or seem to be snooping around as they view the space, take note. Make sure that you are taking in the small details, as well as the overall persona that they are giving off.
Do they seem overly curious about who will be in the office or what the working conditions will be like? Wanting to know the basic setup and work expectations is understandable and expected, but if they persist on knowing whether employees will be in the office or are overly insistent on an empty building when they are cleaning, this could be a sign that something strange is at play. If someone is very insistent on gaining access to certain spaces, this could be another red flag of ulterior motives. Even if they are standard spaces they would expect you to want them to clean, not taking no for an answer and pushing the issue is likely a sign of further combative behavior to come.
The key thing to consider when you are hiring an outside office cleaning company, or any outside company, is that you have done your due diligence to look into their background and do a reference check. If a company isn’t willing to give you references of past work up front, there is a good chance that it is because they are trying to cover something up in their past.
